Chloe was up bright and early this morning and rearing to go. I am not a morning person. But eventually we got into it. She decided her brother and sister could wait until next weekend, she wanted to make a pillow case for her Nan, who is in a nursing home after having a stroke last year.
Her mum came to pick her up to go visit Nan just as she was ironing the completed pillow case. A lovely purple one with splatters of pink, exactly what my sister in law Maureen would love.
Today, I taught my favorite great niece how to sew. I'm very proud of her. She performed far beyond my expectations.
Chloe May is 9 years old and has never sat at a sewing machine before. She showed no fear of the machine at all and very quickly mastered sewing straight lines at a decent speed. I heard her trying out 'really fast' on the practice fabric when I was out of the room. Yep, no fear. She also learned to zig zag neaten the seam edge. She was so keen, she used up 3 fat quarters practicing.
So, she's ahead of the lesson plan, what's going to be the first project, the first day she sits down to a machine, . . . . . . . . Hmmmmmmm.
Something she can complete today. (We started around 3:00pm)
A pillow case will be just the thing. Off to the stash we went and she very quickly spied a nice bright print that I really like and did have something in mind for it. (But more about that later, it will still happen, there's plenty of fabric there)
(Oh I love this girl, she takes after her great aunt, attracted to bright fabrics)
Sewing the hems.
Very good at guiding the foot along the edge of the hem fold. Remembers to hold threads and back tack a couple of stitches at each end.
Look at that hand placement . . . . So confident, so natural.
Her own pair of clippers around her neck just like her great aunt.
Little bliss bombs going off while I watch her.
The finished article. Ready for use tonight.
And we she has decided to make one for her big brother tomorrow, and depending what time mum comes to pick her up, she may have time to make one for her little sister too.
